Cream of Asparagus Soup

My local market has some lovely asparagus on sale, so I thought I'd try my hand at some cream of asparagus soup. Thing is, I've never made it before. Do you any of you have any tried and true recipes for cream of asparagus soup? I'd like to keep it low fat/low cal if possible.

Thanks in advance!

On the Judicious Use of the Ban Hammer

My 'fandom' has its fair share of the social misfits So much so that I'm comfortable in making the assertion that most of the population within this subset has been or felt that they were a social outcast or somehow different from the general populace at one point in their lives. Because of this shared experience, there's a small tank built around the idea of accepting your fellow geek or nerd no matter their behavior. [1]

This is stupid.

Anywhere you go, whether in the real world or on the internet, there are always bad apples. We've all met them. The attention-whores, the drama-queens, the trolls, the liars and scammers. They're as much a part of the social landscape as wasps at a picnic. Intentionally and unintentionally, these people sow chaos in their wake. They disrupt the flow of things, unsettle the status quo and engender a sense of discomfort if not outright disgust with their behavior.

My solution? Ban them from participation until they learn to behave. [2]

Although I applaud the desire to better your fellows and, in fact, encourage it, a gaming group or event is not the place for personality altering therapy to occur. They are, in fact, two conflicting things. Therapy is often an unpleasant process, lacking in entertainment value and happy memories. The purpose of gaming is (I would hope) the opposite of this, with fun being the order of the day.

Besides, assholes, regardless of how they came to be assholes, should not be tolerated just because they like the same system as you. It doesn't help them and it doesn't help the group as a whole. First, it doesn't help them because they rarely grow out of that behavior. There is no punishment for acting out. In fact, they're rewarded for their poor behavior with acceptance and attention when otherwise intelligent people defend and justify their actions and treatment of others. And before someone pulls out the old protest that people can change given the right, gentle, guidance, I ask you, how many of the vast number of people you know have changed their ways for the better? Of course there are exceptions but they are exceptions.

Not the rule. Not the norm. Not the standard.

Second, it doesn't help the group as a whole because as much as we want to think that it's all about one-on-one interactions it isn't. Discontent and unhappiness is a disease that can spread from a single point to effect the whole group. Hell, consider the contention that arises from just bringing the matter up. And who is at the center of this little maelstrom? Yup, you got it.

In conclusion: Go forth, ban and take back a piece of happiness.

Having friends is a privilege, not a right.

---------------------------

Notes:
1. Accepting them regardless of what their interests are or what they're a fan of is a different matter. Geeks and nerds tend to form tribes around that sort of thing.

2. Disclaimer: Blah, blah, blah, be sensitive. give them warnings and state clearly why they've been given the dunce cap and asked to sit in the corner.

Cubicle of Unfathomable Awesomeness!

We’ve all seen them, envied them:  They are the Cubicles of Unfathomable Awesomeness, beacons of style in the soulless sea of the modern workplace.  Is your cubicle unfathomably awesome?  Look for these tell-tale signs:

  • Multiple pages from the Cute Overload Page-A-Day Calendar, the only calendar specially formulated to melt away those stressful brain cells.
  • The almost-nearly-completely-as-cool calendar for the ASPCA!
  • Pen. (Pens rock!)
  • Telephone with more buttons than the Millennium Falcon.
  • Web browser open to Google Analytics, bringing instant karmic enlightenment to statistics junkies.

And the crowning touch, the crème de la cool…

We’re Not Even Touching This One

Sometimes, truth is funnier than fiction, so here’s sender-inner Kimberley H.:

This is little baby Rufi, our four-month-old chihuahua. He loves a bit of warmth, so when Nick my boyfriend called me from the bathroom to “show me something cute” I was initially a bit unsure… then lo and behold what do I see but Rufi nestled in the warm underwear nook!

Autumn Food Thoughts

This Autumn that slides towards Winter is marked by a growing desire to cook meals from scratch. This weekend, I will attempt a steak, kidney and mushroom pie. I'm still debating between ale and cabernet sauvignon for flavor. Next weekend will be split pea soup if I can get out of bed early enough to hit the Farmer's Market to order a ham hock. Persimmons, I think, would be lovely as well. I'll have to check what the mushroom lady has in stock.

substitute for egg/egg beaters?

Hey there,

I'm going to be starting a mass banana bread bake-off (I owe some ppl thank-yous),

I absolutely LOVE the recipe I have but it calls for eggs,
I will using cage-free like I always do for most of the loaves, as most of them are not vegan or even vegetarian anyway, and cage-free/organic is all I buy.

anyway, I have one friend who is on a huge diet, as she is morbidly obese. I plan to make hers with ww flour and splenda (instead of bisquick and sugar), and while normally I would use egg-beaters, I can't seem to find anything that resembles organic/cage-free/etc.

So, I'm not sure what I can substitute that will bake the same as eggs w/o the caloric/cholesterol/fat content and meets the above requirements.

Any ideas??

I live within an hour of a big city, so maybe if you recommend something I could call around to see where I could find it, even if I bought some in bulk to freeze I know it would get used...

Thanks in advance!

Of Course, You Realize This Means War

The whole human-rights problem was upsetting enough, but now the People’s Republic of China has crossed the Rubicon and gone too far! From sender-inner Kristina D. comes this startling news (emphasis ours):

We were recently traveling in China and Tibet – were you aware that Cute Overload is blocked there?! It’s understandable though, outrageous cuteness threatens social stability, which is their greatest fear… We thought we would surely perish from CO withdrawal! But luckily there was plenty of cute Tibetan pooch action in Lhasa to keep us going.

Hilda’s Revenge

…Because you’ve seen Hilda’s ears, right? It’s like two furry Venus Flytraps just sprouted out of  her head – oh, poo! Sweetie, did I not mention that I needed a French manicure today –anyway, I mean, Hilda has a cute face…it it weren’t for those pipe cleaners she calls whiskers. It’s like, ‘What, did a 5-year-old invent you?’

By the way, how do my brows look? It’s like the one thing Hilda does right, you know?

I'm going to look angry for a very long time.

Um, no. I did not ask for two “creepy cocoons” to be placed above my eyes. Where is Hilda. I need to speak with her.

They may look like furry Venus Flytraps, but they hear all.

You could just use Chunk’s whiskers as Q-Tips, Deidra L.

(no subject)

Hey, loves. I have a question/request. My question: am I the only person here who absolutely cannot stand onions? It feels like every good recipe in here, or any recipe I see practically anywhere else, somehow involves onions and that would be fine, but I don't know how to successfully replace them. My request: any advice for me would be wonderful, or bettet yet, just a few good basic recipes without onions that I can work with? Soups in particular would be great, because I think they're especially delicate and probably need something specific to replace the onions.

Am I totally alone in my complete and utter hatred for this vegetable?

Interesting Broccoli Recipes?

Tomorrow, I am hosting dinner at my home for several families. I have a ton of fresh broccoli that I would like to use, so I am looking for an interesting way to prepare it. I plan to serve baked ziti, which is very cheesy, so I would like to keep the broccoli dish vegan. I am also planning a tomato salad and homemade bread.

So, now that you have a general sense of the meal, what would you suggest?

Thank you!

~ Sam.

The Strong, Stuffed Silent Type

“… and I really must say how nice it is to meet such a good listener, someone I can open up to and really express myself, because in this day and age, the art of conversation is on its last legs, what with texting and e-mail and all the distractions of modern life, I mean nobody really sets aside the time anymore for a good, old-fashioned chat, in fact I was just telling someone other day…”

Pasta with Hazelnuts

This is a recipe I made last night from Christina Pirello's book "Cooking the Whole Foods Way.  It was amazing!  It's not a "pretty" dish, but it was delicious!!

You'll need:

1 head garlic, roasted
1 onion, diced
1/4 cup + 1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 cup hazelnuts, toasted
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar *reduced - see below
1 lb. pasta
sea salt, to taste
chopped fresh parsley, optional

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Take a head of garlic and slice off 1/4" from top; drizzle a little olive oil and some sea salt - wrap in aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.  Put the hazelnuts on a baking sheet and bake for about 15 minutes until they are toasted/lightly browned.  Once they are done and cooled put them on a hand towel and rub the skins off.  (Not all of them will come off)  Place nuts in a food processor and finely grind.

*Balsamic vinegar - Take 1/2 cup vinegar and put in small sauce pan over low heat.  Let simmer uncovered until reduced by half.

Make pasta and set aside when cooked.

In a large pot saute' onion in 1 tbsp. olive oil until soft and translucent.  Add mashed pulp from roasted garlic & 1/4 cup olive oil to pot and cook for 5 minutes with a little sea salt.  Take off heat and add in the balsamic vinegar reduction and all but 1/4 cup of the ground hazelnuts.  Save the 1/4 cup for garnish on top.   Add pasta and mix together.  Stir in parsley if using.

*I used brown rice pasta & grapeseed oil

sexy potluck Food?

Hi friends! i've seen an endless array of posts in this community over the years pertaining to potluck food, and what to feed omnivores for dinner when they're weary of vegetarian cuisine, etc. but here's my dilemma: my work is having a potluck on Monday and we're all supposed to bring something. I have something of an off-again, on-again flirtation with a coworker of mine, and want to bring something absolutely decadent and delicious to show off. Shallow? Probably, but there it is. i'd prefer it to be a main dish or salad, not a dessert, because I want to show him how good vegetarians can eat, and perhaps pave the way for a dinner invitation at my place in the forseeable future.
anyone got any good recipes for wooing coworkers/love interests of the omnivore variety?
thanks a million in advance!
